The Jazz plan to sign guard Kyle Weaver to a 10-day contract, calling the 6-foot-6, 200-pound player up from the NBA Development League's Austin Toros.

Utah general manager Kevin O'Connor announced the move Wednesday while the Jazz were practicing at the team workout facility.

"We like his experience," O'Connor said. "We like the fact that he can play a couple different positions."

With Utah's Raja Bell, Andrei Kirilenko, Devin Harris and Ronnie Price out Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers due to injuries, O'Connor said that Weaver will help fill out a depleted roster. Weaver is expected to sign with the Jazz and practice Thursday, and should be available for the Lakers game.

"Obviously, we're down some guards," O'Connor said. "I think our commitment to both the members of the team and to the fans — we don't want to be playing people totally out of position. We could've wound up in a situation where it could've been really difficult for us to field enough guards to play."

The former Washington State player averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 43.4 percent from the field during 37 combined D-League games this season with Austin and Iowa.

Weaver was drafted by Oklahoma City and played three preseason games this year with Chicago, averaging 2.3 points, 2.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds. A combo guard who can defend at the one and two, Weaver is expected to remain with the Jazz at least through an April 9 road game against San Antonio.

"There's two or three reasons that you bring somebody up at this time of the year, and I think he fills all three reasons," O'Connor said. "One, he's somebody that we want to take a serious look at that. Two, he's somebody that we're probably going to need to put in the game. And three, what kind of guy is he? And he comes up a good light on all of those."

Weaver was on Utah's emergency signing list, as was center Marcus Cousin, who joined the Jazz for a 10-day stretch in mid-March as the team struggled with inside depth due to injuries.

"Obviously we're in a situation where we need somebody to come in," O'Connor said. "Especially somebody to come in and play. And [Weaver's] had NBA experience, and he's been with a program like Oklahoma City who does things the right way."
