The future has turned out to be a bust. No flying cars, no time travel and worst of all, no hoverboards.
At least until now. Sort of.
Onewheel is a new, hoverboard-like skateboard that rides on, you guessed it, one wheel. It’s motorized, so it drives itself, and moves forward or backward depending on how you lean. So, it kind of sounds like a Segway for non-dorks.
The board is the brainchild of Future Motion, a Palo Alto company who, like all of us, saw Back to the Future II and thought "I want that." The idea is that the electric motor and the single wheel create a sense of floating over the ground. The company claims that even people who don’t skateboard can learn to ride a Onewheel in just a few minutes.
Future Motion has a Kickstarter page that goes into detail about the device and provides a production schedule. That’s also the place to buy — yes, buy! — this futuristic board. Unfortunately, however, the cheapest model runs $1,299.
