For many families, sitting down with a Macaulay Culkin classic is a holiday tradition. But this year, instead of "Home Alone," try listening to Culkin’s new pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The former child star who delighted America in the home burglary classic now plays "percussion/kazoo/vocals" for The Pizza Underground, a group that covers songs from Lou Reed’s ground-breaking band. Except that all the songs are about pizza: "Papa John Says," "I’m Beginning to Eat the Slice," "Take a Bite of the Wild Slice," and so on.
The group’s Bandcamp page reveals that its first EP — "The Pizza Underground Demo" — was released Dec. 2 using a name-your-price model (there is no minimum). The band also has Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook profiles.
It’s perhaps surprising that in a year that brought us Miley Cyrus’ tongue, Robin Thicke’s misogyny and Kanye West’s boring attempt at meta whatever-that-was, the most delicious slice of postmodernism might just be a weird parody band by Macaulay Culkin. And just maybe this would also be the kind of tribute the notoriously iconoclastic Reed might have approved of.
In any case, the band’s demo is up for the ordering, so get it now and keep the change, you filthy animal.
