Directions » Looking for a new trail to explore post-turkey but not quite ready to break out the snow shoes yet? Head up to Kays Creek Parkway, a paved trail in Layton with enough of an ascent to get your heart beating that’s still easy enough for the whole family.
There are several entry points, but I chose the Adam J. Welker trailhead at 2700 North 2125 East. To get there from Salt Lake City, take Interstate 15 north to the U.S. Highway 89 entrance toward South Ogden. Take exit 404 for State Road 193 and turn left off the exit onto 3000 North. Take another left onto 2000 East into a neighborhood, then left again on Deere View Drive. Turn right on 2125 East, which dead-ends into a trailhead parking lot.
Destination Kays Creek Parkway
Hiking time 1.25 hours
Round trip miles 4 miles
Elevation gain 247 feet
Trail head restrooms No
Dogs allowed Yes
Bikes allowed Yes
Turn left at the trailhead for a walk through a marshy, reedy creek area coated in snow backgrounded by mountains. Turn around when the trail dead-ends about a mile later on 1450 East and walk back, taking a slightly different route offered by a small loop. Head north around Hobbs Reservoir (there’s also some unpaved paths for fishermen that could be fun to explore) and up a small canyon for another mile, then turn back and return to the trailhead. Be careful for small amounts of snow on the path.
