Hike of the week: Alexander Basin
Directions • This hike is a great workout. It starts with an uphill climb and doesn't stop, going uphill about a mile until you reach a glacier-carved basin. It starts at about 7,000 feet, so your lungs really feel that uphill as well. It also offers some great views of the mountains around Millcreek Canyon, though most of the famous fall foliage was gone on a recent day.
It also was beginning to get icy on the trail. After slipping, sliding and a couple of falls, our party turned around about a quarter-mile before reaching the basin. If you do try the ice, bring the right gear and use care. Hikers who make it to the basin also can continue around the shoulder of Gobblers Knob to the Bowman Fork Trail.
To get there, take the 3900 South exit off Interstate 215 and head for 3800 South. Entrance to the canyon costs $3. Alexander Basin is located almost eight miles up the canyon. Destination Alexander Basin
