The American Hiking Society is looking for people to volunteer their vacations on one of 50-trail building projects. Go to href="http://www.americanhiking.org/" AmericanHiking.orgtarget="_blank">AmericanHiking.org for a full list of the projects.
There's onehref="http://www.americanhiking.org/ProjectRegistrationDetail.aspx?projectId=590" target="_blank"> project in Utah. The Society needs volunteers to re-establish the href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mantilasal/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=73256&actid=51" target="_blank">Big Bear and Little Bear trails in the Manti La Sal National Forest near Orangeville. This is not a one-afternoon project. The Society warns this is a "strenuous" project that will require primitive camping.
Rarely does going around in circles receive such fanfare.
But on Monday, Salt Lake County officials dedicated a new tunnel in Draper that will create a 10.2-mile loop trail. The tunnel unifies Ann's Trail to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and Clark's Trail.
From the href="http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/54020115-78/draper-trail-valley-project.html.csp" target="_blank">Tribune article:
"It’s neat to look down on the [Draper LDS] temple," said Jenny Murdock, ... a regular user of the trail system. Murdock especially recommended the view "at night when the temple lights are on and the valley lights are in the background."
As for the trails that already exist, Utah State Parks href="http://www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/sltrib/Outdoors/hikes.csp?hike=424" target="_blank">has a lot of them. Lately there has been questions about whether all of the state parks will remain open or if Utah will follow the example of Arizona and California and close some parks.
Last week the Fred Hayes was given the permanent job (or as much as any gubernatorial appointment is) as director of Utah State Parks. Hayes href="http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/53977752-90/parks-hayes-state-utah.html.csp" target="_blank">told The Tribune he vowed to "fight with our dying breath" to keep every park open.
