It wasn't exactly in Arches National Park's master plan.
A sheet of ice is covering the last 300 yards of the trail to Delicate Arch. Those of you who have hiked the trail know that's an uphill section carved out of rock.
That section faces the north so it's in the shade during the day when the sun is melting snow and ice elsewhere in the park, said Karen Henker, lead interpreter at Arches National Park.
"Whenever we get an appreciable amount of snow on the ground, that's the spot it persists," Henker said.
The trail is so slick, Park Service staff are recomending traction devices on your feet. There have been no injuries reported on the trail, Henker said, though someone did twist an ankle earlier this winter in on a slick spot on Double Arch in the section of the park known as The Windows.
