The Burbot Bash is rolling along and Ryan Mosley with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources sent in this report.
Well after four days (nights) the results are pretty impressive. Contestants have harvested/checked-in a grand total of 1,957 burbot, with a total estimated weight of 2,544 lbs, five of which have been tag recaptures and will lead to some money. A total of 504 burbot were tagged in the reservoir, which began back in November 2010. Tag recaptures are eluding to some movement in the reservoir, including one fish moving up reservoir over 1-mile in just 8 days and another moving down reservoir about 3-miles in 10 days. The other three burbot were stationary, recaptured where they were tagged.
Big fish so far is up to 33-inches and 7.27 lbs, small fish (youth category) is a tiny 8.75-inches and 0.14 lbs, and one-night catches have ranged all the way up to 73 fish per team. This has also been a good opportunity to necropsy some of the harvested burbot. It appears most of the big fish are spawned-out females and many of their stomachs are actually empty. We did see some "payback" today when we opened up a 26-inch burbot with a 8-inch burbot in its stomach. Nice!
Other than in some of the mid to lower lake bays, ice has now deteriorated below Holmes Crossing and anglers should use caution around edges and pressure ridges (as always). Up to this point, most of the fishing pressure has been on the west side of the reservoir. Anglers should recognize that fish were spread almost equally down both sides of the reservoir.
There's still time to register for the tournament and win the $5,000 grand prize. The Burbot Bash ends this
