Mormon missionary count hits historic high: 75,000

Make that 75,000 — and counting.

That’s how many Mormon missionaries are currently serving in more than 400 missions around the globe.

The milestone is another outgrowth of the October 2012 lowering of the minimum age for full-time missionary service to 18 for men and 19 for women.

Before that historic change, there were 58,500 LDS missionaries, so the latest tally represents a 28 percent jump.

To help with the continuing surge, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has created dozens of new missions, opened a new Missionary Training Center in Mexico City and expanded its flagship MTC near Brigham Young University — with plans to further grow its Provo operation.
