On Friday afternoon, CNN attempted to explain Mormonism to readers who might have questions about the Utah-based faith based on seeing two Mormons vying for the Republican presidential nomination.
But for several hours, when you clicked on the piece, “Explain it to me: Mormonism,” the photo was of polygamists with the breakaway Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in their long-sleeved pioneer dresses and distinctive hairstyles. That picture later was replaced with an image of the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially abandoned polygamy in 1890, as the piece points out.
The list of Mormon beliefs is idiosyncratic at best, mentioning without explanation “sacred undergarments” and describing three “famous” Mormons.
The accompanying video contains a more complete look at the religion.
