State of the Debate
George Pyle
George Pyle has been a newspaper writer in Kansas, Utah, Upstate New York, and now Utah again, for more than 30 years - most of it as an editorial writer and columnist. Now on his second tour of duty on The Salt Lake Tribune Editorial Board, he has also done a stretch as a talk radio host, published a book on the ongoing flaws of U.S.agricultural policy and, in 1998, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing. His most active bookmarks are Andrew Sullivan, Christopher Hitchens and Tina Brown. And he still thinks the Internet can be used for intelligent conversation and uplifting ideas.

Guns in schools: Bill would protect parents’ rights — Salt Lake Tribune Editorial

Most Utah legislators are great champions of parental rights: the right to teach your children about sex or, indeed, hold school in your home; the right to decide what medical treatment your children will receive; the right to at least be notified when your child wants an abortion.

Carol Spackman Moss, D-Holladay, will test lawmakers’ commitment to protecting parents’ rights to decide what is an appropriate — and safe — environment for their children. It boldly pits the revered right to carry firearms against the mostly sacrosanct right of parents to make decisions about their children. ...

A right to know who may bear arms — Des Moines Register Editorial

... As we witness increasing human carnage from shootings in offices, shopping malls and schools, it’s more important than ever for the government to regulate who is allowed to buy and carry weapons. With that government power comes a public interest in knowing how well the government exercises that power. One way to know that is by assuring that government records related to gun regulation are open to the public. ...

Gun extremists hurt cause — Ogden Standard-Examiner Editorial

Some of the antics by gun rights supporters, whether it’s shopping in a store with a firearm in full view, parents and children openly displaying their weapons at rallies and other events at the Utah Capitol, and holding a Confederate flag at a gun rights rally, are hurting the gun rights movement. These people look ridiculous, and most people who see these antics are turned off. ...

[Roger that: Don't wait to be told — George Pyle | Salt Lake Tribune ... I’m sorry. And I say this with all respect and affection. I know you mean well. But someone needs to tell you. Openly carrying a firearm in a public place makes you look like an idiot. ...]
