West Valley City • The Utah Grizzlies have signed defenseman Mike Folkes for the 2014-15 season, general manager and coach Tim Branham announced Monday.

Folkes, 25, enters his second season in professional hockey. Last year, he had one goal and three assists in 44 games for the Grizzlies.

"Mike is a character player and person," said Branham. "His work ethic and determination is exactly what I look for when recruiting. He will play a major role this season."

In college, Folkes played at Carleton University and Ohio State.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to come back to Utah and play for the Grizzlies," he said. "It's a great organization, led by a great coach in Tim Branham. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."

The Grizzlies open the new ECHL season on Oct. 17 at Maverik Center against the Idaho Steelheads.
