By the end of the week-long trip, the five scientists, even the skeptics, agree that a break from laptops, cell phones and texting on a remote river seems to recharge the brain. Says Strayer:
“Our senses change. They kind of recalibrate — you notice sounds, like these crickets chirping; you hear the river, the sounds, the smells, you become more connected to the physical environment, the earth, rather than the artificial environment.”
The scientists' experience also makes a reader wonder if wilderness protection is the only hope for our sanity in a world increasingly crammed with digital devices.
