Salt Lake Crawler
Glen Warchol
I've been a newspaperman for nearly three decades and have done hard time at United Press International; small dailies and nasty alternative newspapers, including the Observer in Dallas. In some bizarre convulsion of fate, I joined a few other twisted gentiles at the Deseret News for a few years. Along the way, I reproduced twice. I live in Salt Lake's historic refinery district with my current wife Mary Brown Malouf, another journalist. Now, I'm on a new adventure on the Internet-where the best things in life are (mostly) free.

State Film Commission director Marshall Moore has launched a campaign to renew tax breaks for production companies that film in Utah. The tax breaks, due to sunset this year, have drawn 22 projects -- including sci-fi classic John Carter of Mars -- that created 1,200 jobs.

Predatory bees. Utah has poached a $100 million Adobe Systems' expansion from California and the Sacramento Bee is putting out the alert that other California companies are at risk: The Beehive State has been reaching out to California-based technology companies, touting Utah's business-friendly environment, alluring tax incentives, comparatively affordable cost of living and pleasing recreational attractions, including Olympic-grade winter sports facilities.

And it's working.

Getting back in the game. Former Oklahoma State basketball coach Sean Sutton pleaded guilty to felony drug charges and has completed treatment at Utah's Cirque Lodge for pain-killer abuse. Tulsa World columnist Jimmie Tramel reports that Sutton, to stay straight, now desperately needs a coaching job: Head coach. Assistant coach. Doesn't matter. A life is at stake.

In other sports rehab news . . . The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab Utah took in 22 pit bulls two years ago used in dog fighting by NFL star Michael Vick. To date, only five have been tamed enough to be adopted out to homes. "They were very traumatized. We actually took in some of the toughest cases."

No way! Conservatives have figured out that phantom Congressman Jim Matheson is a Democrat and they've produced a cheap on-line video, complete with scary Jaws-appropriate music, to spread the word. The spot will come as a revelation to many Salt Lake City Democrats.
