Salt Lake Crawler
Glen Warchol
I've been a newspaperman for nearly three decades and have done hard time at United Press International; small dailies and nasty alternative newspapers, including the Observer in Dallas. In some bizarre convulsion of fate, I joined a few other twisted gentiles at the Deseret News for a few years. Along the way, I reproduced twice. I live in Salt Lake's historic refinery district with my current wife Mary Brown Malouf, another journalist. Now, I'm on a new adventure on the Internet-where the best things in life are (mostly) free.

Warming up for the Lege

Young Latinos were joined by gay-rights groups and even progressive Mormons at the Capitol to protest rumblings that Utah will follow Arizona in passing a tough immigration law. Says Melodia Gutierrez of the Brown Berets: “It is time we rage against this system because silence only allows for the continuation of a flawed system.”

On the one hand. . . The Tribune reports that the UofU Utes have a solid reputation as they go into the PAC-10 in 2011. What impresses Pac-10 coaches is Utah’s nine-game bowl streak, including two BCS wins. Says Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson:“They beat Cal, so that kind of tells you what they are about.”

On the other . . . BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall doesn't think the Utes acceptance into the PAC-10 will hurt recruiting at left-behind BYU because the "BYU experience" is unique. "I don't think it will be affected one bit. They may say it will be affected a ton, but I don't think we will lose a single player who wants (to attend) BYU to any other team in the country."

How about just stormy days? Congressman Jason Chaffetz wants the Post Office to take 12 "mail holidays" each year rather than completely drop Saturday delivery. The PO has to do something or it will lose $238 billion over the next decade.

And more horseback riding. After spending more than 30 days at Utah's Cirque Lodge treatment treatment facility, American Pie actor Chris Klein is going to re-up for another tour. With two DUIs under his belt it's probably a good idea.
