Salt Lake Crawler
Glen Warchol
I've been a newspaperman for nearly three decades and have done hard time at United Press International; small dailies and nasty alternative newspapers, including the Observer in Dallas. In some bizarre convulsion of fate, I joined a few other twisted gentiles at the Deseret News for a few years. Along the way, I reproduced twice. I live in Salt Lake's historic refinery district with my current wife Mary Brown Malouf, another journalist. Now, I'm on a new adventure on the Internet-where the best things in life are (mostly) free.

Gov. Gary Herbert's decisive handling of "The List" incident, a straightforward response that could become a case study in a PR textbook, is seen as a cowardly failure in some parts of Utah.

The Tribune, always quick with a records request, got a look at the emails that flooded the Herbert's office after state officials quickly tracked down the culprits who gathered hundreds of names of purported illegal immigrants from confidential state records and released them to the media and law enforcement. The two state employees were fired and criminal charges may follow.

From the 325 pages of emails, I offer a Child's Treasury of Bigotry:

“I am from Utah … With a piece of sh-- like you as governor is it a good place to be from? You are a joke … and a useless one at that.” -- Ken Auston*

“[Y]ou should be tried for treason for not up holding our law of people in this country illegaly. [Y]our one sorry governor and unAmerican, you should be empeached or step down-now depoart these law breaking illegals now.” -- Stephen Glenn Powers*

“Are you out of your mind? This is treason! You call yourself an American? The people who made that list are Heros! they should be given a medal!” -- Shane Doyle*

I'm predicting a Heroes Parade down Provo's Center Street -- and it won't be for Herbert and Workforce Services Director Kristen Cox.

(*I hope these are really their names and not Mel Gibson aliases.)
