Year-end tax tips
Published on Dec 27, 2011 08:06PM

Charitable donations must be made by Dec. 31 to be deductible for the 2011 tax year. The deadline applies to those who itemize deductions on their tax returns. Taxpayers who make a cash donation must have a canceled check, bank statement, credit card statement or a written statement from the charity showing the name of the charity, the amount of the donation and the date it was made. Note: Donations charged to a credit card by Dec. 31 are deductible for 2011, even if the bill isn't paid until 2012.
