BYU's basketball team held its first practice of the season tonight at the Marriott Center, and after the workout that included 18 players, coach Dave Rose announced the team captains. Senior Tyler Haws and juniors Kyle Collinsworth and Chase Fischer were picked this year. No surprise on Haws and Collinsworth, the two best players on the team. Fischer's captaincy is mildly surprising, considering BYU has four other seniors on the roster besides Haws, and the fact that Fischer has yet to play a minute in a Cougar uniform. The Wake Forest transfer sat out last year, due to NCAA transfer rules. But he's said to be very popular with his teammates, and he was a captain at WF his sophomore season before deciding to transfer. Haws is currently fifth in all-time scoring in BYU history with 1,944 points. He needs 655 to catch Jimmer Fredette. That will be a season long storyline as Haws makes his assault on BYU's record books. Collinsworth led the Cougars in rebounding (8.1) and assists (4.6) last year and was second in scoring (14.0) and steals (1.7) before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the WCC Tournament championship game. Fischer is from Ripley, West Virginia and played two seasons at Wake Forest. He averaged 4.3 points and shot 42.2 percent from 3-point range as a sophomore. BYU's exhibition season begins on Nov. 1 against the Colorado School of Mines. The annual Boom Shakalaka event will be on Friday, Oct. 17 in the Smith Fieldhouse. The annual blue-white game, called the Cougar Tipoff, is Oct. 29 at the Marriott Center.
