Riley Burt, an all-around athlete at Box Elder High in Brigham City, Utah, told BYU defensive coordinator Nick Howell and head coach Bronco Mendenhall earlier this week that he plans to sign with BYU in February. Burt, who plays defensive back and running back for the Bees, will be a senior this fall.

He’s listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds.

BYU became the first school to offer a scholarship to Burt last month. He was also receiving interest from Utah and Utah State.

Here is the updated list of players who have committed to BYU football:

Will Sedgwick, 6-1, 220 LB from Laguna Hills, Calif. (Laguna Hills High School)

Dayan Lake, 5-11, 185 CB from Layton, Utah (Northridge High School)

Mike Tafua, 6-3, 210 DE from Honolulu, HI (Kamehameha High School)

Devin Kaufusi, 6-5, 200 DE from Provo, UT (Timpview High School)

David Lui, 6-3, 305, OL from Pittsburgh, Calif. (Pittsburgh High School)

Khari Vanderbilt, 6-2, 185 DB from San Jose, Calif. (San Jose City College)

Riley Burt, 6-2, 195 DB from Brigham City, Utah (Box Elder High School)

Kody Wilstead, 6-5, 215 QB from St. George, Utah (Pine View High School)

Last month, we reported that BYU defensive tackle JonRhyheem Peoples was transferring because Mendenhall had pulled his financial aid. Basically, Peoples didn’t reach certain benchmarks regarding his weight and scholastic performance that Mendenhall set for him to achieve and lost his scholarship.

Late Tuesday night, Matt Gittins of television station KPVI in Idaho reported that Peoples will land at Idaho State. He will not have to sit out a year because ISU is a lower-division (FCS) program.

Peoples is from nearby Rigby, Idaho, and graduated in 2012.

Coincidentally, Idaho State opens the 2014 season at the University of Utah and plays its second game at Utah State. He reportedly also considered Weber State and North Dakota State.
