Where will Matt Carlino go? That's the question of the month I'm getting from BYU sports fans, after the rising senior guard announced on April 1 that he will graduate from BYU in June and play out his final season of eligibility at another school. So far, Carlino has declined interview requests from local writers, and apparently the only reporter he has spoken to is Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Goodman tweeted that Carlino told ESPN he had heard from Purdue, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh and Memphis. But that was on April 3 — nearly two weeks ago. Wednesday, Brian Hamilton of SI.com listed his top 10 available transfers, and Carlino is on the list. Noted Hamilton: "Carlino is going for the most stamps on his college hoops passport, starting at UCLA before transferring midway through his freshman year to BYU for three seasons. His shot selection has been a running issue – Carlino shot 38.5 percent in 2013-14 – but a veteran point guard who averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 assists and who is instantly eligible will find a good home." Speaking of transfers, there was some speculation that BYU might be interested in one of the four players who announced after the season they are leaving Utah State. However, seniors Jordan Stone and Danny Berger both said last week they are enrolling at BYU-Hawaii, an NCAA Division II school. Marcel Davis and Kyle Davis (not related) haven't made their intentions known. Marcel Davis is from American Fork (in Utah County), but BYU would seemingly have more interest in Kyle Davis (from Alta High and Southern Utah University) because of his rebounding and low-post scoring ability. The Cougars solved their scholarship crunch when Carlino left, but adding another player would resurrect those woes for coach Dave Rose. If they didn't have such problems, I think they would want Kyle Davis. He had 16 points and nine rebounds in USU's 85-74 loss to BYU last December at EnergySolutions Arena. By the way, an assistant coach at another instate institution (not BYU) told me that the restrictions USU is putting on the former Aggies regarding which schools they will release the players to is "ridiculous."————————————— A couple of BYU football-related links to pass along, for those of you needing your BYU football fix 10 days after the Cougars wrapped up spring camp.
