The BYU Cougars are preparing to face an interim coach (Marques Tuiasosopo) in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 27 against the Washington Huskies. Washington's coach, Steve Sarkisian, has accepted the head coaching job at USC. Boise State's coach Chris Petersen, will take over at Washington next year. Tuesday, Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com, a Rivals.com site that covers Texas, reported that sources have told him that 16-year Texas coach Mack Brown will step down this week. What does that mean for BYU? It means that next year the Cougars will likely be facing three first-year coaches, maybe more. The three first-year coaches will be at Boise State, UConn and, now, apparently, Texas. It should be noted that Brown told another website that he is recruiting in Florida today and hasn't told anybody that he is stepping down. Brown was right about Texas AD DeLoss Dodds stepping down a few months ago, even when Texas refuted that report, so I'm thinking he is right about this one, too. BYU opens the season at UConn on Thursday, Aug. 28, which will be its second-straight game against a group of Huskies. UConn fired Paul Pasqualoni in September, and T.J. Weist has been acting as interim coach. It appears the Huskies are zeroing in on Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, now that Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson has accepted the head job at Wake Forest. Of course, BYU fans should probably be more concerned about who Boise State hires, considering the Cougars and Broncos have a long-term scheduling agreement. The two-for-one deal with Texas ends next year when the Cougars visit Austin on Sept. 6. The one-for-one deal with UConn ends in 2015 when the Huskies visit Provo on Oct. 31. Coincidentally, BYU will play a BCS-bowl team from 2013 next year, but it is not Texas, Boise State, California or UConn. It is Central Florida, which will meet Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1. The Cougars travel to Orlando on Oct. 11, repaying the Knights for their visit to Provo in 2011, a 24-17 BYU win after Cody Hoffman returned a kickoff for a touchdown. With the news a few weeks ago that BYU is off Southern Miss' schedule in 2014, the Cougars' schedule is seemingly set, although school officials have not made an official announcement.
