Returning starting guards Tyler Haws and Matt Carlino are going to lead the BYU basketball team in scoring this year. That quickly became apparent at the Cougars held their annual intrasquad game on Wednesday night at the Marriott Center, the Cougar Tipoff. It wasn't a true game, however. The first 20 minutes was a game, as Carlino starred for the White squad and Haws for the Blue squad. The talent was split fairly evenly between the teams, and the White took a 35-34 win. After halftime, the White team included all the scholarship players (with the exception of Wake Forest transfer Chase Fischer, who has to sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules.). The Blue team had Fischer, the walk-ons and practice squad players. Not surprisingly, the White team took a 60-39 win, but it was close through the first 10 minutes. At one point, the Scout team had a 22-21 lead, with Fischer leading the way. Combining the two contests, Carlino led all scorers with 31 points. Haws had 28 points, while freshman Eric Mika had 19, juco transfer Skyler Halford had 17 and Anson Winder 13. Fischer was ice-cold from three-point range early, but heated up when it was him against the world, pretty much, and finished with 11. Josh Sharp and Frank Bartley had five points apiece, while Kyle Collinsworth and Luke Worthington had four each. Highlight reel plays: Fischer's behind-the-back pass to a fellow Blue team member for an easy layup, Mika's alley-oop dunk off a Carlino lob and a dunk by Haws as he raced down the baseline. Nate Austin left the first game in the opening minutes when he apparently took a shot from Worthington and broke a tooth. He went to have it looked at by a dentist. That meant Sharp started at the four spot in the second-half game, along with Carlino at the point, Haws at the two, Collinsworth at the three and Mika at the five. Coach Dave Rose said Austin, Sharp and Bartley, the freshman, are vying for the starting spot at the four. BYU's exhibition opener is Saturday at 7 against Colorado College in the Marriott Center. Carlino finished 11 of 21 from the field, including 4 of 8 from three-point range. He also had five rebounds and three assists. Haws was 8-for-12 from the field, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. He was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. If there was a troubling sign for the Cougars, it was that they were not very good in the first game (when scholarship players guarded scholarship players) from three-point range. They were 5 of 21 from long range.
