Happy Monday morning, readers. I am back at the keyboard today after spending most of last week and the weekend on Boulder Mountain in south-central Utah reuniting with family and hooking fish (or trying to hook fish). So let's do some catching up on the BYU sports spectrum. BYU football coaches picked up another commitment from a member of the class of 2014, according to Scout.com. That brings the total number of commitments to 11, if my math is correct. The latest commit is Michael Shelton, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound cornerback from Wakefield High School in Raleigh, N.C. Shelton was also receiving interest from Oregon State, Duke, Georgia Tech and Utah. He participated in BYU's Junior Day, a one-day, invitation-only camp, last month, and then received a scholarship offer from BYU last week. He is trying to graduate from high school in December so he can participate in the 2014 spring practices. ——————————— More good news came Kyle Van Noy's way last Friday as the BYU All-American linebacker was listed as one of 50 "players to watch" for the 2013 Player of the Year Award, which is handed out by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The Camp Award is the country's fourth-oldest college football award. Van Noy is now on the watch lists for the following awards: Walter Camp, Bronko Nagurski, Bednarik, Butkus, Lombardi, Lott Trophy. The 6-4, 245-pound senior had 13 sacks and six forced fumbles last season and ranked No. 4 in the country in tackles for loss, with 22. One-time BYU recruit Manti Te'o won the Walter Camp Player of the Year award last year.———————————- On Thursday, BYU running backs Jamaal Williams and Michael Alisa were among 63 nominees for the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the country's top running back. Alisa was also on that watch list last year, but suffered a broken arm in the Hawaii game, the fifth game of the year, and missed the rest of the season.
