BYU TE Friel on Mackey Watch list

Another BYU player has been named to a preseason watch list.

Tight end Kaneakua Friel, who will be a senior this fall, is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which goes to the most outstanding tight end in college football.

Around Provo, the Mackey Award is known for snubbing Dennis Pitta back in 2009 when the current Baltimore Ravens tight end was a finalist.

Winner that year?

Aaron Hernandez -- who has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons.

But back to the Mackey Award. Friel is one of 37 players on the list, as is Utah tight end Jake Murphy, a junior. Murphy, of course, signed with BYU out of high school before transferring to Utah after his church mission.

Friel caught 30 passes last year for 308 yards and five touchdowns.

He is from Kaneohe, Hawai'i.

The Mackey Award will be presented live on Dec. 12 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show at 4 p.m. MT on ESPNU.

I covered the Utah State Amateur on Tuesday, where BYU golfer Cole Ogden won medalist honors by shooting a two-day total of 6-under-par 138 on the Gold and Silver Courses at Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Midway.

Ogden, brother of the former Cougar who played in The Masters a few years ago -- Clay Ogden -- told me he redshirted this past season at BYU because he just wasn't totally healthy, and wasn't playing well, last fall. He will be a junior this coming fall at BYU, and expectations will be heightened, considering his success this summer in not just the State Am, but several other tournaments.

Also Tuesday, BYU golfers Jordan Rodgers, Jordan Hammer, Joe Parkinson and Tommy Higham qualified for match play. Devon Purser, a former BYU golfer who is transferring to Weber State, also made match play.

Two BYU golfers -- Adam Tebbs of Las Vegas and Mike Jurca of Saint George, lost in the playoff.

By the way, Clay Ogden qualified on Monday to play in the Web.com Tour's Utah Championship, which begins Thursday at Willow Creek Country Club.

Another BYU golfer who recently used up his eligibility in Provo, Zac Blair, received an exemption to play in the Utah Championship and will also tee it up at Willow Creek on Thursday.

Need your daily Tyler Haws fix? Haws and Team USA play their third game at the World University Games today (Wednesday) against Sweden. The game can be seen at 11 a.m. MT today on ESPN3. It will also be shown on tape-delay at 5 p.m. MT tonight on ESPNU.

Haws will be looking rediscover his shot -- and get more playing time -- after he was used sparingly in wins over the United Arab Emirates and the Czech Republic earlier this week.
