(Chris Detrick | The Salt Lake Tribune) USU cornerback Will Davis and safety McKade Brady defend against BYU wide receiver Cody Hoffman in October.
BYU's Van Noy, Hoffman make Phil Steele's preseason All-America teams

Catching up on some BYU sports-related items after tromping through southeastern and southwestern Utah the past few days on my quest to play all 121 golf courses in Utah:

* Rising BYU football seniors Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman are starting to make some preseason All-America teams, as expected.

Magazine predictions guru Phil Steele came out with his 2013 Preseason All-America Team on Wednesday, and Van Noy was a first-team selection. Hoffman earned second-team honors.

BYU was one of only nine programs with players named to both the first and second teams.

* The major league baseball draft begins tonight (Thursday) and BYU outfielder Jacob Hanneman -- who is also a member of the Cougars' football team -- is expected to go in the first 10 rounds, perhaps as early as the fifth round. Hanneman was recently named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, which is picked by Collegiate Baseball magazine. Hanneman and San Diego pitcher P.J. Conlon are the only WCC players on the team.

* Tuesday, ESPN and BYU announced that the Cougars' 2013 home opener against Texas (Sept. 7) will be televised nationally by ESPN2. The game will kick off at 5 p.m. MDT at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Also Tuesday, BYU announced its Nov. 16 game against Idaho State will begin at 1 p.m. and will be televised by BYUtv.

So far, TV plans for seven of BYU's 12 2013 football games have been announced.

TV plans and start times for the Utah, Middle Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, Houston and Wisconsin games have not been announced.

* BYU probably will not announce its 2013-14 men's basketball schedule until mid-July, if past years are any indication. However, it was learned last week that the Cougars will play the University of Massachusetts on Dec. 7 in Springfield, Mass. The game at the MassMutual Center is the first of a home-and-home series the two schools have scheduled. The return game will be played during the 2014-15 season in Utah, either in Provo or at EnergySolutions Arena in SLC.

Springfield is about 30 miles away from the UMass campus in Amherst.

* Speaking of my quest to play all 121 golf courses in the state, a shout-out to BYU fan Chris Maddox of the sales team at Red Ledges in Heber City. Maddox helped me and a friend get on the exclusive golf course east of town, and the gesture was much-appreciated.
