BYU's Haws, WCC Player of the Week, 14 points away from matching freshman season total

There weren't a lot of shots to go around for the BYU basketball team back in the 2009-10 season, not with Jimmer Fredette dominating the ball with regularity and Jonathan Tavernari and Jackson Emery also taking their fair share of jumpers.

Tyler Haws still managed to score 397 points that year -- for an 11.3 per game average -- but was still trying to feel his way around college basketball at that time.

No such scenario exists in 2012-13, Haws' first season back after spending the last two seasons on his mission.

The BYU guard leads the West Coast Conference in scoring with a 21.3 average and is now being talked about as a possible WCC Player of the Year winner. Remarkable, considering he didn't even make the preseason all-WCC team.

Haws earned WCC Player of the Week honors on Monday for the second time in three weeks after averaging 24.0 points per game in wins over Pepperdine and Santa Clara. He did so while shooting .643 from the field, .400 from three-point range and .909 from the free-throw line.

He grabbed 3.5 rebounds and collected 2.5 steals per game.

Haws was the WCC PoW on Dec. 31 after his 42-point game against Virginia Tech; Brandon Davies has been BYU's only other PoW this season, earning the award on Dec. 17.

Last year, Davies became the 45th member of BYU's 1,000-point club (he finished the season with 1,043 career points, No. 42 on BYU's list) and Haws is on pace to become the 46th member, perhaps as soon as this year.

Haws, a sophomore, has 780 career points right now, which is the exact same number Fredette had at the end of his sophomore season. Haws scored 397 points as a freshman; He's scored 383 this year.

The Cougars will play at least 14 more games this year, maybe as many as 17 or 18.

Haws has scored 20 points or more in each of his last five games.
