Football player Bronson Kaufusi practices with BYU basketball team

Another sign that this BYU basketball season isn't going as well as coach Dave Rose would have liked: multiple starting lineup changes.

The Cougars take on Northern Arizona tonight at the Marriott Center, and Rose said after practice Wednesday afternoon that he might change his starting lineup yet again.

The only players on BYU's roster who have started every game this season are Brandon Davies and Tyler Haws. Point guard Matt Carlino has started in two-thirds of the games (eight of 12) and Josh Sharp has started in nine games but recently lost his starting spot.

Rose said the Cougars will "settle into a starting lineup here pretty quick" after the practice, and it appears he will go back to the lineup he used to start the season: Davies, Haws, Carlino, Sharp and Brock Zylstra.

After tonight's game, the 8-4 Cougars will meet Virginia Tech at EnergySolutions Arena in SLC before West Coast Conference play begins next week.

Although he won't dress for either of the two games this weekend, football player Bronson Kaufusi has joined the Cougars' practices, as expected.

The 6-foot-7 Kaufusi, listed at 260 pounds, might be able to give the Cougars a better inside presence. Right now, Rose said, coaches are trying to figure out a role for the former Timpview High basketball star.

"Right now, he looks like a pretty good football player playing basketball," Rose said. "But we are impressed with his hands. He's got a nice touch on the ball. He's got good feet for a big guy, and obviously he's a big body."

Kaufusi apparently received permission from football coach Bronco Mendenhall to try his hand at basketball after the Cougars' 23-6 win over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl last week.
