Another busy week on the BYU sports scene is upon us, with the BYU men's basketball team playing Tuesday night at home against Georgia State, and then hitting the road for the semifinals and finals of the Coaches Vs. Charity Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The football-playing Cougars travel to 8-2 San Jose State to take on the red-hot Spartans on Saturday night, while the top-seeded BYU women's soccer team plays host to Auburn in an NCAA College Cup second-round match on Thursday at South Field.
I will be covering the football game in San Jose, while my colleague, Martin Renzhofer, will be with the basketball team in Brooklyn.
Here's my brief look-ahead to Saturday's showdown with SJSU, a team that received four votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. BYU didn't receive any votes, yet the Cougars are three-point favorites.
For more on how well the Spartans are playing, and what the game means to them, check out Jon Wilner's latest blog.
Hard to imagine, but SJSU could be left out of a bowl game, despite an 8-4 record, or better.
Couple of BYU players were recognized Monday as FBS Independent Players of the Week for their roles in BYU's 52-13 win over Idaho.
Receiver Cody Hoffman is the offensive player of the week and kicker Justin Sorensen is the special teams player of the week.
Hoffman caught nine passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns. It was his 11th 100-yard receiving game, which is tied for third all-time at BYU. Hoffman has moved into a tie for fourth-place on the school's career receiving touchdowns list, with 23.
Sorensen had one of the worst field-goal attempts in stadium history, but otherwise played well. He made all seven of is PAT attempts to extend his streak to 68 straight PATs without a miss, a school record. The old mark was 67 straight and had stood since 2004.
