While BYU's football team won't play again until Nov. 10, against Idaho, the men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday in the final exhibition game of the season, against Findlay (Ohio). Coach Dave Rose granted media availability after practice Tuesday night to preview Saturday's game and provide a few updates and whatnot. Perhaps the biggest news to come out of the gathering was that guard Anson Winder's recovery from an ankle sprain suffered the second day of classes in late August is not coming along so well. "The X-rays were negative, but they put him in a boot for a week. He will practice we hope in a week, and see how it goes. If he can go, then we will just move on. If not, they are talking about putting him in a boot for a month. He's nervous, we're nervous. But we will just see how it heals in a week, and how he responds next week," Rose said. Winder rested the ankle for awhile before practices began, and went the first six or seven practices. However, it was still bothering him, so doctors have put him in a boot for now. They talked about the possibility of surgery, but Rose said that won't be needed.As far as the rest of the team, "We've got some guys that are banged up, but we had a good practice today, and I think they are looking forward to kinda playing through some of the things that are kinda nagging at them," Rose said. "Hopefully we can get past that and move forward." It is anybody's guess which players will get the starting nod on Saturday against Findlay (7 p.m., Marriott Center). Rose went with Brandon Davies, Josh Sharp, Tyler Haws, Craig Cusick and Matt Carlino last week against Southeastern Oklahoma, but said he won't go with the same five this week. "I think we will start a different group and try to find [who can play]. I think with our team right now, I think there are nine or 10 guys who are actually capable of starting," he said. "That won't be a real big emphasis for us. But we do know that guys like to start, and I like to start the same group a lot. So we will find our group. It probably won't be found by Saturday. We will probably find out here in the next two weeks or so." What did Rose learn about his guys last week in the first exhibition game? "That there are a lot of things we need to work on," he said. "I think we learned a lot about, mostly kinda our rotation of positions. You are trying to find your first group, and then guys who can play a multiple of positions for you. I am really impressed with [freshman] Cory Calvert, and his ability to run our team early, our first scrimmage out." Couple more comments from Rose after Tuesday's practice: On whether the team is shooting better this year:'I think so. Only time will tell. The game the other night was an easy game to shoot in because we got a lead and we kept it. But I got a lot of confidence in these guys. I know they have all worked really hard. They have prepared well. They are talented, and I think we have a really good frontline that is going to cause defenses to have to adjust to guard there. And then that should give us some pretty good, clean looks at the basket. And hopefully we can know them in."On who will make the 15-footers now that Noah Hartsock is gone: "We will see how it works. ... One thing is we've gotten used to is every year we replace our best offensive player [except Jimmer Fredette's senior year]. I am confident we will find a way to score."On Brandon Davies taking three-pointers: "I am a pretty easy guy to please. If you make more than you miss, then you can shoot them. We are going to try to stay with that philosophy." On the team's best trick shot artist:I think [Director of basketball operations] Mike Hall. He motivates the other guys to try and improve their trick shot artistry. But they have a lot of fun. If you watch the group of guys interact with each other, you can tell there's a good bond here, and hopefully that will help us down the road."
