Good morning, everyone.
Happy Friday. Looks like we could see some rain today along the Wasatch Front, and some forecasters are saying it could carry into tomorrow when BYU plays host to Oregon State (1:30 p.m. MDT, ABC).
There's plenty of BYU-related offerings for you in today's Tribune, leading off with this column on the BYU football team's outstanding defense by Gordon Monson. The column includes some interesting comments from former BYU coach LaVell Edwards, whose teams were known for their offense but also played defense quite well most year. So don't miss it.
My colleague at The Tribune, Martin Renzhofer, helped me out a bit with this piece on junior receiver Cody Hoffman, who sort of faces his hometown team on Saturday when Oregon State pays a visit. Hoffman grew up on the Northern California coast about four hours away from Corvallis.
Finally, here's my notebook with a bunch of odds and ends about the game, and how the Cougars know little about OSU junior QB Cody Vaz, who will get the start for the Beavers in place of the injured Sean Mannion.
Some BYU football recruiting news came down the pike last night as I was sweating over every pitch in the Orioles-Yankees game. Thanks to @tdawgcoug for the heads-up on Twitter.
The Cougars received a commitment from Claudell Louis, a 6-foot-6, 270-pounder from Haiti who currently plays defensive end for the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. Their athletic teams are aptly named the Giants, and Louis seems to fit that description.
He is expected to play offensive tackle for the Cougars and has three years to play two. His Twitter handle is @C_Louis15.
The Giants' 2011 roster lists Louis as being from Boyton Beach, Fla. The 2012 roster isn't on the school's website yet. Why hurry, right? It is only mid-October.
