Although he didn't get a chance to kick the PAT that likely would have tied the game at 7-7 against Boise State, BYU's Riley Stephenson had an exceptional game in the 7-6 loss on Thursday. Stephenson got off punts of 52, 55, 56 and 57 yards in the game, often flipping the field for the Cougars.
The senior from St. George (Pine View High) is the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Special Teams Player of the Week.
All told, Stephenson punted six times for a 47.-0 average. Four of his punts pinned the Broncos inside their 20-yard-line.
Stephenson is fifth in the FBS in punting with a 47.3 average this season.
The Cougars will practice tonight at the indoor practice facility, with media availability afterwards. Expect to see plenty of questions for coach Bronco Mendenhall about the quarterback situation.
Will Mendenhall and offensive coordinator Brandon Doman stick to their pronouncements made after the Boise State game that Riley Nelson will get the start if he's healthy enough to play?
To me, the question shouldn't be about Nelson's health as much as it should be about his capability. Sure, he may be healthy enough to play. But is he capable of playing well? Those are two different questions, and if his performances in the last two games are any indication, he's just not capable right now of doing the things he needs to do to move the offense.
We will see.
Here's my look-ahead to Friday's game against Hawaii and new Warriors coach Norm Chow.
After covering the Utah-Arizona State game Saturday night, the Tribune's Kurt Kragthorpe stayed in the Valley of the Sun and checked out the Eagles-Cardinals game with former Cougar Andy Reid coaching the Eagles and former Cougar Dallas Reynolds getting his first start at center with Philadelphia.
