BYU getting close to hiring a new baseball coach

It has been 24 days since BYU ousted 13-year baseball coach Vance Law, and a few folks in Provo tell me they expect athletic director Tom Holmoe to announce Law's replacement any day now.

One of the leading candidates for the position is Dixie State College coach Mike Littlewood, a former Cougar player.

Littlewood confirmed to The Tribune last week that he interviewed for the position on Thursday, and says he feels like the interview could not have gone any better than it did.

Littlewood hasn't been shy about noting his interest in the job, and told The Spectrum newspaper of St. George that he really believes BYU could be turned into a national baseball powerhouse.

"It is the only [Division I coaching] job that I would want," he said.

Littlewood has also said that he would be willing to give up his gig as a college basketball official if the the money is right at BYU.

Littlewood is 502-229 at DSC and guided the school to a national junior college championship in 2004.

The website Stadiumjourney.com has a review up on BYU's baseball park, Miller Field. Check that out here.

Written by BYU graduate David Mortimer, the piece says the Cougars lack big-time baseball cachet, but have one of the better college baseball stadiums around.

In a little over a week, BYU will conduct its 2012 Football Media Day. I will hazard to guess that it is the first football media day in the country for the 2012 season. For instance, the Pac-12 football media day is July 24, nearly a month later.

The day will open at 10 a.m. with a "State of the Program" show to be televised by BYUtv and will feature Holmoe and football coach Bronco Mendenhall.
