BYU basketball commits shine in Philly, and a Cougar gridder makes a creative proposal

How good is Lone Peak guard Nick Emery, the rising senior who has committed to BYU basketball?

Plenty good, say several writers and evaluators who watched the younger brother of former BYU star Jackson Emery win MVP honors at the Hoop Group Jamfest in Philadelphia last weekend.

Here's more from NBCsports.com on Emery's performance; comparisons to Jimmer Fredette are already starting.

Another BYU commit, rising junior T.J. Haws, was also on Emery's team that went undefeated at the event.

Haws sprained his ankle the first game, but still gutted it out and played the next couple of games.

I tweeted this out on Friday, but it warrants mentioning here with several national outlets having picked up on the video. BYU defensive tackle Jordan Richardson chose an unusual -- yet creative -- way to propose to his girlfriend at the recent Ragnar Relays in San Diego a few weeks ago. Check it out here.

The WAC could be crumbling, with Utah State the latest WAC school that appears to be planning to leave the conference. The Tribune reported Sunday that USU will join the Mountain West Conference within the next week or two, along with San Jose State.

BYU is also in the WAC -- sort of. The Cougars' softball team is in the WAC as it awaits the WCC to get enough softball-playing members to begin sponsoring the sport itself.

Monday, BYU's Delaney Willard was named the Verizon WAC Hitter of the Week. It's the third honor of the season for Willard.

The senior right fielder from Camarillo, Calif., hit .444 with two doubles, a triple and a home run and drove in 12 runs as the Cougars went 5-0 last week.
