Back at it today after taking most of last week off .... Scanning the BYU sports spectrum, it was a fairly good week for the Cougars, not only on the field but also off. In case you missed it, the inaugural Governor's State of Sport awards for Utah in 2011 were announced last week in a ceremony at EnergySolutions Arena. BYU dominated the voting and won the majority of the awards: * BYU women's basketball player Lexi Eaton is the High School Female Athlete of the Year, having prepped at nearby Springville High School. * BYU soccer player Carlee Payne is the Collegiate/Pro Female Athlete of the Year. * Former BYU basketball star Jimmer Fredette is the Collegiate/Pro Male Athlete of the Year. * BYU's Dave Rose is the Coach of the Year. * Jimmer Fredette's 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer against Utah is the Play of the Year. * BYU's win over Gonzaga in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament last March is the Game of the Year. Also, Utah-bound prep quarterback Chase Hansen of Lone Peak High was named the High School Male Athlete of the Year. Saturday, BYU's rugby team outlasted Utah 38-22 to win the Wasatch Cup in Provo. The Cougars took an early 13-0 lead, lost the lead for a while in the first half as Utah went ahead 15-13, and then rallied just before halftime to take a 16-15 lead into the break. BYU never trailed in the second half in improving to 13-0and maintaining its No. 1 national ranking. Current Cougar football player Paul Lasike and former Cougar running back Malosi Te'o were instrumental in the win.
