Pacific accepts WCC's invitation, set to become 10th member in 2013-14

The West Coast Conference made it official around noon on Wednesday, officially accepting the University of Pacific as its 10th member.

The Tigers will join the conference that added BYU some 18 months ago on July 1, 2013 and will participate in the 2013-14 school year. They will leave the Big West Conference next summer.

Pacific is located in Stockton, Calif., and is the oldest university in California, having been founded in 1851. Total enrollment is close to 7,000. Its basketball arena seats just over 6,000.

The Tigers will participate in baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, men's golf, women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball.

In men's basketball, Pacific has an average RPI of 175 the past five years, and made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The Tigers upset No. 5 seed Providence in the 2004 NCAA Tournament and knocked off Pittsburgh in the 2005 tournament as a No. 8 seed.

The addition of a 10th school means that the WCC can return to its round-robin format in basketball, with each school having a travel partner. Several coaches were unhappy with last season's setup, as the schedule was altered greatly to accommodate the addition of BYU.

With Pacific located in the Bay Area, it is unlikely the Tigers and BYU will be travel partners, however. Several longtime observers of the league noted Wednesday that San Diego will likely become BYU's travel partner, due to direct flights between San Diego and Salt Lake City, among other reasons.
