Lost somewhat in BYU's 77-64 win over Pepperdine on Saturday in breathtakingly gorgeous Malibu, Calif., was the fact that senior forward Noah Hartsock joined the Cougar's 1,000-point club. With 20 points against the Waves -- his eighth game of 20 or more points this season, and ninth in his career -- Hartsock now has 1,003 career points and is the 43rd player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.
Hartsock is No. 43 on BYU's all-time scoring list; He can catch Dave Eastis (1,015 points) on Wednesday when the Cougars play at Virginia Tech, although scoring a lot of points on the defensive-minded Hokies is going to be difficult for all the players.
Tipoff for that game is at 5 p.m. MST and will be shown on ESPN3 (online).
"I thought it was good for us. It was one of those tough, grind-it-out games," Hartsock said of the win over the Waves. "I thought we played with a lot of intensity, a lot of emotion. That's what we talked about, that we were lacking that competitive spirit, and I thought we brought it back tonight."
With at least a dozen or more games to play this season, Hartsock has a chance to break into the top 25 if he keeps up his 17-points-per-game scoring pace. Eldon Brinley (1927-31) is at No. 25, with 1,195 career points. In case you are wondering, Jimmer Fredette is at No. 1 with 2,599 points; Danny Ainge is No. 2 at 2,467.
Hartsock is also moving up BYU's all-time blocked shots chart. He had three blocks against the Waves, and now has 158 in his career. He needs eight more to catch Russell Larson and move into a tie for third.

There's no media availability at BYU's practice today, but coach Dave Rose will conduct a teleconference with reporters at 10 a.m. this morning. Rose said Saturday that this will be an "interesting" week for the Cougars, who return from their cross-country trek in the middle of the week to face nationally ranked St. Mary's on Saturday in Provo.
Probably not the way Rose would have drawn it up, but it is what it is, he said Saturday. Virginia Tech will make a return trip to BYU next year -- sort of. The game will be played at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.
By the way, ESPN's Andy Katz says Provo on Saturday is one of the "Places to Be" this week for the BYU-St. Mary's game.
