Promising BYU freshman OL Ryker Mathews needs foot surgery, out for season

Suddenly, the devastating injury bug has bitten the BYU Cougars, after coach Bronco Mendenhall had pronounced the team on Monday to be the healthiest one he's had after a fall camp in seven seasons.

Freshman offensive lineman Ryker Mathews, expected to be the first lineman in off the bench this season, said on is Facebook page tonight that he needs foot surgery and is out for the season. Mathews said he will redshirt.

Here's the post: "Surgery next week on a torn plantar plate in my foot.. Out for 3-4 months.. Redshirt season here I come.."

It is not clear whether it is the same injury that kept Mathews out of practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. With the freshman from American Fork High standing in the corner of the IPF in a walking boot, Mendenhall said he had a case of "turf toe" and that it didn't seem serious.

Tuesday, BYU announced that tight end Devin Mahina had a small fracture in his neck and was out for the season as well.

Mahina and Mathews join freshman Colby Jorgensen and sophomore Iona Pritchard as players who are out this season after entering fall camp in good health.
