Well, it looks like the Cougars no longer have to guess who will start at quarterback for Ole Miss on Sept. 3. One of the three guys in the battle to be the starter, Randall Mackey, was suspended Tuesday by coach Houston Nutt for his role in a bar fight (disorderly conduct). Mackey joins tight end Jamal Mosley on the Ole Miss troubled players list, after Mosley was arrested Sunday on charges of being drunk in public. Nutt said Tuesday that Barry Brunetti, a transfer from West Virginia, will start against BYU. The third QB in the battle, Zack Stoudt, will play against BYU, Nutt said. The Cougars are not practicing today, giving coaches time to install their game plans for the Rebels. Originally, they were going to take Thursday off for that, but everything was moved up a day because the Cougars are ahead of schedule in camp. Last time the media was able to talk to BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall, he knew that an Ole Miss QB had gotten into trouble, but was not yet aware he would be suspended."It sounds to me like they were undecided as to who was the starter. I don't know if they have named one yet, or what their intentions were with the player who got in trouble. But I am sure we will find out soon enough," Mendenhall said. He was right. At least the Cougars didn't waste any time preparing for Mackey, said to be a bigger running threat than the others."We kind of know the style they are going to play. But the first game there are a lot of questions, and that just adds one more to it. Of the three quarterbacks, I don't know any of them well enough to know what strengths and weaknesses they might have. So we just try to prepare our defense and execute the best we can, and then match up to personnel and see how it goes," Mendenhall said.—————————- Quick reminder that the BYU basketball team concludes the basketball-playing portion of its trip to Greece this morning with a game against the Italian National Team. We have competed against each other so long. But they have held together pretty well. I think there are multiple leaders on the team, besides the captains, and we have leaders on the special teams as well. So really that core group of six players are the ones that I think most of our guys look to. Then you have leadership council in addition to that, so with the number of seniors that we have, and as much time as they've been in the program, there is a different stability to this season than there was a year ago. Maybe similar to years before that, in terms to having more veteran players." On the depth in the secondary: "Well, we have more depth. We still have some unproven players, but it is fun to have two or three players battling, and being considered. The biggest challenge in the secondary is putting the right players together. We will focus hard on that now until we play ... And again, I won't be positive on that part, in terms of their chemistry, until we play a game and see how they communicate and handle it. But they are good enough players."
