Here's a pretty good sign that BYU basketball coaches believe Brandon Davies will be re-admitted to school this fall, clearing the way for the 6-foot-9 center to rejoin the team.
Davies practiced "against" the team today in the Marriott Center, wearing a green jersey along with former players Lee Cummard, Trent Plaisted, Lamont Morgan and Logan Magnusson and going hard against BYU regulars in an early-practice 5 on 5 scrimmage.
I stopped in at the Marriott Center today on my way to BYU football practice to catch an hour or so of the BYU basketball team's workout as it prepares to leave for Greece.
The Cougars leave on Saturday and will play five games in Greece, taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows schools to make one overseas trip in the summer every four years.
There was no media availability afterward, so I wasn't able to ask coaches or Davies if there's some news regarding his status with the school. A BYU basketball spokesperson who is on vacation responded to a text by saying he hasn't heard anything new.
From what I saw, Davies hasn't lost a step. He has gained a little facial hair, which will obviously have to come off if he's re-admitted later this month. Of course, he was banned from representing the school on March 1 for violating the honor code, and subsequently withdrew as a student.
Regardless of his status, Davies will not be making the trip to Greece.
Walk-on center Michael Boswell, who recently returned from a church mission, watched from a wheelchair on the sidelines. The casts have been removed from both of Boswell's legs, but he is wearing a walking boot on his left leg.
He had surgery to remove bone spurs a few weeks ago.
Chris Collinsworth (knee) participated in the stretching, then spent time riding the stationary bike while the other players practiced.
