BYU football star Cody Hoffman has probably had better nights.
Hoffman, the sophomore-to-be from Crescent City, Calif., spend some anxious moments in custody Tuesday night because he failed to pay a $90 speeding ticket issued in Provo last November.
Nate Abbott, spokesman for the Washington County (Utah) Sheriff's Office, confirmed that Hoffman was booked into the Washington County Jail in Hurricane, Utah, early Wednesday morning on a failure-to-appear warrant. The warrant stemmed from the Nov. 16, 2010 speeding ticket in Provo.
Abbott said Hoffman was pulled over on I-15 near the Utah-Arizona border just south of St. George for a "minor traffic violation." Hoffman was given a warning for the violation, but did not receive a ticket, Abbott said.
However, the officer at the time learned a warrant for Hoffman's arrest had been issued by the Provo City Justice Court in the amount of $352, and the 20-year-old Hoffman was detained.
Hoffman was booked into jail, but jail records show that the bail of $352 was paid and Hoffman was released shortly after the booking.
Justice court records show that Hoffman's mother, Cindy Hoffman, paid $140 on March 14 to Provo City Justice Court to take care of the November speeding ticket and some subsequent late fees. However, because the bail amount had gone up to $352, the warrant was not recalled.
A Provo City justice court clerk said Wednesday that the payment was mailed in and Cindy Hoffman likely did not know that a warrant had been issued for a higher amount.
Hoffman broke out in a big way in BYU's 52-24 rout of UTEP in last year's New Mexico Bowl, catching eight passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns.
He caught 42 passes in 2010 for a team-leading 527 yards and seven touchdowns. He also returned 14 kickoffs for 380 yards.
Having redshirted in 2009, Hoffman caught the first touchdown pass of his career in BYU's loss at Florida State last September.
