The news broke around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, but the ramifications for the BYU Cougars' third-ranked basketball team will last throughout the month.
Star center Brandon Davies, who has started all but three of the 27-2 Cougars' games this season, has been dismissed from the basketball team due to a violation of the BYU Honor Code.
The school sent out a news release verifying the dismissal after getting inquiries from news outlets earlier in the day when rumors started to fly that the sophomore had indeed been kicked off the team.
The nature of Davies' violation is unknown at this point (at least to this reporter).
I talked to BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins a few minutes ago, and she said that the Honor Code office became aware of the violation on Monday. It was determined Tuesday that Davies would no longer be allowed to represent the university this season.
Jenkins said the case is "under review" and that no decision has been made regarding Davies' status as a BYU student. As of today, he's still in school.
A BYU basketball spokesperson, Kyle Chilton, said coach Dave Rose will not comment on the situation until after Wednesday night's game against New Mexico at the Marriott Center.
Chilton said the team is understandably shocked at the turn of events.
Here's the news release from BYU:
PROVO, Utah (March 1, 2011) — Due to a violation of the BYU Honor Code, Brandon Davies will not represent the university on the men’s basketball team throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 season.
Davies, a sophomore from Provo, Utah, has started 26 of 29 games for the No. 3-ranked Cougars, averaging 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 24.9 minutes per game in 2010-11.
BYU does not make public details regarding violations of its Honor Code. Given BYU became aware of this violation yesterday, some decisions regarding Davies’ future on the basketball team and at the university are yet to be determined.
