Jars of Clay

Spotlight Show • The Christian pop-rock band has kept a loyal fan base since it broke into the mainstream in 1995 with "Flood." The band's most recent album, August's "Inland," has earned the tour warriors some of the best reviews of their career. "We're overwhelmed," said lead guitarist Stephen Mason in a recent telephone interview. "It's something really wonderful when you feel like you're onto something, and people around you affirm it ... For many people, it's the first they've heard of Jars of Clay in some time." For those who are newcomers, the band's name comes from 2 Corinthians 4:7: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."Mason said part of the new album's success can be attributed to Oregon's Tucker Martine, the Grammy-nominated producer known for his work with the Decemberists, R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Mudhoney, Sufjan Stevens and Spoon and others. "He has prophetic ears," Mason said. "He hears what can be." Brooke Waggoner and Kye Kye are also on the bill.
