Lena Prima (the daughter of Louis Prima) and Macy Gray (with David Murray) are just two of the stars of the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival, which is preceded by a day of clinics at the University of Utah on Saturday.

The festival moved from the middle of summer to Labor Day weekend, said founder Jerry Floor, because "our big emphasis is on education," and schools are out in July.

Other performers include Jazz Voices of Poetry, the Ambassadors, Orquesta Latino, the Wasatch Jazz Project, the Vinnie Falcone All-Stars, and of course, the Salt Lake Jazz Orchestra, with an after-hours jam session capping the night at 11 p.m.

Prima, at 7:30 p.m., is the Louis Prima's youngest daughter and a New Orleans-based headliner (like her dad) in her own right, and Gray, at 9:30 p.m., is the 43-year-sold soul and R&B singer best known for her chart-topping hit "I Try" in 1999. Gray will be with Murray, an acclaimed tenor saxophonist and bass clarinet player who is a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet with Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill and Hamiet Bluiett.

When • Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m.Where • Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main St., Salt Lake CityTickets • $16 at slcjazzfestival.org or gate
