The Classical Greek Theatre Festival of Westminster College presents a new production, with original music by composer Cathy Neff, of Sophocles' tragic masterpiece "Oedipus the King" this September.

The tour runs throughout the state from September 6–29, and debuts in the Courage Theatre on the Westminster College campus Sept. 6.

Oedipus the King chronicles the story of Oedipus, a man who becomes the king of Thebes who was destined from birth to murder his father, Laius, and marry his mother, Jocasta. The play is an example of a classic tragedy, noticeably containing an emphasis on how Oedipus's own virtues and faults contribute to the tragic hero's downfall, as opposed to having fate be the sole cause. We see and hear Oedipus in action, and he is called man, hero, savior, master and tyrant by the chorus and various characters. In his virtues and his vices, Oedipus embodies characteristics often associated with ancient Athens. In a way, the Athenian audience was watching itself onstage. But the play, like so many Greek tragedies, also tells a universal truth—since we are all concerned with identity, who we are and how we relate to others and to the divine. Sandra Shotwell, a professor of theater at the University of Utah with an expertise and experience in Greek tragedy, directs the production featuring a recent American translation by Marianne McDonald. Spencer Brown of Westminster College creates the set design with costumes by Valerie Nishiguchi ... and choreography by Solange Gomes. The production will tour with performances at the OC Tanner Amphitheater in Springdale, BYU, Weber State University and at Red Butte Garden.
