It is summer, so that means that Derek Trucks is on the road. "That’s been the trend for the last 18 years," the 33-year-old slide guitarist (and once child prodigy) said in a phone interview.
But another trend is visiting Red Butte Garden with the project closest to his heart, despite stints as bandleader of The Derek Trucks Band and member of the Allman Brothers Band. This summer, before a tour with The Black Crowes (who come to Red Butte Garden in September separately), the Tedeschi Trucks Band will headline the venue, featuring Trucks, his wife Susan Tedeschi, and nearly a dozen other musicians who will trot of the band’s signature, high-enerhy soul stew of Southern rock, blues, Gospel and a little bit of everything else under the sun.
With the couple’s kids in tow, Trucks and Tedeschi and their road-tested ensemble will debut songs from the band’s upcoming album "Made Up Mind," due in late August. "We’re already playing half of it," Trucks said. "We couldn’t sit on those tunes for that long."
Trucks showed that he still has a hunger, despite winning a Grammy Lifetime Achivement Award in 2012 as a member of the Allman Brothers. "I don’t fully accept that one," Trucks said. "I’ve only been there for 15, 16 years. Five, ten percent, I’ll accept."
But, he quickly added, he didn’t hand the Grammy back.
