The Utah Arts Festival will feature newly commissioned work from this year's honorees, including Russell Schmidt, a professor at University of Utah's College of Fine Arts.
As the jazz commission winner, Schmidt will present a world premiere piece, "Patience," on Friday, June 21 at 8:30 p.m., on the Festival Stage.Classical commission honoree Don Freund will be presenting a world premiere of his work "Mixed Blood," for mixed chamber ensemble, as the finale of a composer commissions concert on Saturday, June 22 at 4 p.m. inside the Library Auditorium.Also included in this performance are compositions as follows: "Sunlit," a mixed chamber ensemble piece by Jeff Stadelman; "Lamentations: Hayasdan" for flute and piano by John Kennedy; "Soliloquy" for solo cello by Steve Roens and "In John's Garden" for clarinet and piano, by Igor Iachimciuc.The 2013 Utah Arts Festival runs Thursday, June 20 through Sunday, June 23, from noon to 11 p.m. on Library Square, 400 South and 200 East in downtown Salt Lake City.Adult admission on Thursday is $10, $12 for Friday through Sunday. Thursday and Friday only, you can get in on the lunchtime special, available noon to 3 p.m., for only $6. Children 12 and under are free. Seniors 65 and above are $6. A four-day pass is only $35.Schmidt joined the University of Utah College of Fine Arts faculty in 2011 as Director of Jazz Studies. Among his recent recordings are "Season of Change," on which he leads his own piano trio, "The Surprise of Being – Live at Birdland," by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano, and "Rays of Light," a new Paul Ferguson Jazz Orchestra release.As Professor of Composition at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1992, teaching composition continues to be a major component of Freund's career. Freund's students from 30 years of teaching continue to win an impressive array of awards and recognitions.
