The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is coming this June! The widely respected rock 'n' roll band led by New Hampshire native and Brown University-educated Jon Spencer first visited Utah as a child when his family moved from the East Coast to Palo Alto, Calif. so that his father could take a sabbatical and teach a course at Stanford University.

On the way, the family car got into a wreck as they were just about to go through Salt Lake City, so the family all went skiing for a week to get over the traumatic experience.

In a phone interview, Spencer said he always have fond memories of Utah whenever they visit. The band released an album, "Meat + Bone," late last year after not putting out an album of all-new material since 2004. "There was a fire inside us," Spencer said of the new album. "It wasn't a contractual obligation. We did because we're in love with this music.

Before creating this band — with a name inspired by the way Jerry Lee Lewis speaks — Spencer was in the short-lived but influential rock band Pussy Galore. But he loves being in this band because "we're a product of the three individuals in the group," despite his name being in the name of the band.

"Make no mistake," he said. "It's a collaboration."

Red Bennies open.
