The frontwoman for the Portland, Oregon-based soul-influenced rockabilly band grew up in North Carolina but once she graduated from high school, headed out west.

"I thought about San Francisco or New York City, but those are so expensive," she said in a phone interview.

After working at a bagel eatery at the food court at Portland State University, she quit two years ago as buzz built in Portland, and since has developed key friendships with Portland’s favorite sons The Decemberists.

But it was the Avett Brothers who were early supporters of Sallie Ford and her band, asking them to open many dates for them. "They did so much for us," Ford said.

The band is gradually gaining more and more support, even though Ford acknowledged that one of her band mates, who used to work on fishing boats in Alaska, would "make a lot more money fishing."

But even during Lent, Ford is a better catch.
