The 70-year-old guitarist Elvin Bishop with his signature Red Dog guitar (Gibson ES-345) went solo in 1968, but before that was an integral member of the influential Paul Butterfield Blues Band, as well as a player on the seminal 1969 album "The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper."
These days, Bishop lives off the royalties of his smash late 1970s hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," which is a favorite of directors Spike Lee, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Rob Zombie, all of whom have used that song in their movies.
In a phone interview, Bishop said he has the luxury of only performing when he wants to, and that includes being a regular cruise guest on blues cruises; he just got off one with Taj Mahal.
During the week, Bishop lives out in the country in northern California, and preserves up to 400 cans of the fruit annually from his 40 fruit trees. "I grew up on a farm and I know what real food tastes like," Bishop said. "I raise a big garden. I’m a maniac."
Bishop will bring a stellar six-piece band with him to Park City, with one of them the former bandleader of the late bluesman Albert King’s band.
