The January 2013 edition of local magazine Catalyst features 100 Utahns who have been catalysts for creative growth and positive change.
"We are the melting pot of the Great Basin, a place where practicality, spirituality and creativity all meet and mingle to create a unique essence," states Alice Toler in the introduction. "Out-of-towners, expecting a monoculture, are constantly surprised by the vibrancy they find here." The awardees are some of those whose efforts through the years have cultivated this vibrancy.
Selections were made from a list of almost 200 nominees, said editor & publisher Greta Belanger deJong in the introduction.
The 100 "catalysts" will be honored at a gathering on January 16 at the Leonardo.
Some of the 100 honorees:
Steve Holbrook: founded KRCL community radio in 1980.
Casey Jarman: began the Twilight Concert Series in 1988.
Greg Schirf: in the 1980s opened Utah's first active brewery since Prohibition.
James Soares: introduced to Salt Lake's business community the concept of the Triple Bottom Line: people, planet, profit.
Nancy Tessman: responsible for the building of Salt Lake's nationally acclaimed downtown Main Library.
